Foundations of Open: Technology and Digital Knowledge

Local 2020 Summit
Thursday 3rd April 2008
The Australian National University

What are the 'foundations of open'?
In a time when our lives are increasingly dependent on technologies, it is important we take the time to consider the impact of technology on our lives.

Technology underpins how we interact with society, business, Government, communities and families. As such, technology has an enormous power to define all of these interactions. We have a choice whether this technology is open, accessible, interoperable and accountable, or not.

Ensuring open, transparent and sustainable approaches are considered best practice is important: important to a future where technology empowers everyone, not a privileged few, a future where knowledge is forever, and the use of technology and knowledge fuels creativity and innovation.

Open access is best known in the software development field, where technology is developed publicly and openly and exposed to comment and contribution during development. The same techniques can be applied to the distribution of information for research and education, such as open access publishing with the creative commons.

The 'Foundations of Open' technology and digital knowledge Local 2020 Summit will explore, discuss and develop specific policy initiatives borne out of open access for information, technology, education and governance for the benefit of our society and economy.

Ideas from "Foundations of Open" will be collated and conveyed to the National 2020 Summit."
One topic of the National 2020 Summit is: Economic Infrastructure, the digital economy and the future of our cities. Specifically, the Australia 2020 Summit will ?examine ways to ensure that digital technologies are harnessed to improve consumer services, business productivity and the delivery of government services?. The ?Foundations of Open? virtual local summit will contribute ideas to help achieve these goals.

I would like to thank the Australian National University for their sponsorship and support for this event.
Senator Kate Lundy.
